There are six schools in Tehran Province’s penitentiaries in which 1,900 young inmates are enrolled.  Furthermore, 480 prisoners are studying for bachelors and masters degrees in 15 majors in three universities of applied science and technology.

According to Mostafa Mohebbi, director general of Tehran Province Prisons Office, 24 people are completing graduate degrees and one is doing a PhD at Payam Noor University. “Last October, 1,000 illiterate people were serving terms in Tehran’s jails; however, now there are only 140,” he said, adding that these individuals are currently receiving education, Mehr News Agency reported.

The number of convicts in the capital saw a 1.35% decline last year and decreased by 1.67% since the beginning of this fiscal year in March.
