The high number of brain stroke cases plus the significant drop in the age of stroke victims is serious cause for concern, according to a member of Iran’s Brain Stroke Society.
“A person is afflicted with a stroke every 5 minutes in Iran,” Dr. Elaheh Taqvaei told ISNA. “That’s approximately 100,000 cases in a year.”
Out of every five stroke cases, one is younger than 55 years old.
A stroke occurs when the blood supply to the brain is interrupted or reduced. This deprives brain of oxygen and nutrients, which can cause brain cells to die. A stroke may be caused by a blocked artery or the leaking or bursting of a blood vessel.
