According to the National Committee to Promote Breastfeeding affiliated to the Health Ministry, more than five in 10 Iranian mothers (or 53%) breastfeed their babies until six months as recommended by the World Health Organization (WHO). “Breastfeeding can reduce mortality rates by 13% among babies under the age of one,” said Dr Alireza Marandi, head of the committee on the occasion of World Breastfeeding Week which is held annually between the August 1-7 to encourage breastfeeding and improve the health of babies around the world, IRNA reported.
According to Global Nutrition Targets 2025 set by the WHO, by the year 2025 the rate of exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months of life should be increased to at least 50% in all member states and Iran has reached the target.
