Almost 70% of people suffering from hypertension (high blood pressure) and half of those with diabetes are unaware of their illness, which is why the consumption of medicine used to treat these diseases is significantly low in Iran. “Moreover, many of those diagnosed with either one of the diseases don’t use their meds properly,” Akbar Abdollahi Asl, an official at the Food and Drug Organization, told IRNA. “They usually don’t finish one full treatment course.” He dismissed claims that Iran is among countries with the highest medicine consumption, arguing that per capita medicine use in Iran is about a third of the global average.
