Tehran Municipality’s negligence has led to an increase in rodent population in the sprawling capital, according to Mohammad Haqqani, chairman of the Tehran City Council’s Environment Committee.

“More and more people are complaining about the rodent problem which was under control until recently when the municipality for hitherto unknown reasons stopped its programs,” he was quoted by ISNA as saying.

He said spraying foam, though costly, had proven effective in recent years but the municipality had abandoned the method.

Cleaning gutters and sealing holes with foam are effective methods against the rise of rat numbers, the councilor said. Rats can give birth to up to 800 pups every year. Controlling and curbing their population is an absolute necessity, he said.
