Iran is planning to launch a university aimed at educating the elderly in a bid to “bridge the generational gap” and bring older folks up to speed with the latest developments, according to the head of the Secretariat of National Council of the Elderly.

People older than 60 make up about 9.7% (7.6 million) of Iran’s population, so it is “imperative to bring them up to speed with the latest developments,” Mohsen Salmannejad told IRNA on Tuesday. Programs such as literature, computer sciences, business management, and lifelong learning subjects will be taught. Salmannejad said the scheme has been piloted in Rafsanjan, Kerman Province and Zahedan, Sistan-Baluchestan Province.

“Older people’s role in the society is diminished because they find it difficult to keep up with technological developments; we hope to rectify that,” he said.
