An SMS-based system for Iran’s undercover traffic police was unveiled on Tuesday in a ceremony attended by national police chief, Brigadier General Hossein Ashtari. The mobile system provides access to motorists’ profile and enables officers to register the offence immediately and send it to the driver via SMS. Nine offences can be registered in the system, IRNA reported. “Traffic fines were previously given to drivers through bills but undercover inspectors can now send it by SMS without having to come face to face with the offender,” said General Taqi Mehri, head of the Traffic Police, adding that the cost of the text messages will be paid by the police.
