A system of new traffic police cameras with advanced detection technology is currently being piloted in a city in Iran whose name has not been disclosed.

The surveillance cameras have been installed on police cars and can recognize offences such as mobile phone use, not wearing a seat belt and eating and drinking while driving.  The scheme will be implemented nationwide if it is successful, IRNA reported.

The existing surveillance cameras on police cars are only capable of detecting double-parking and stopping under no-stop signs.

According to Edris Jafari, head of the IT center at the Traffic Police, the plan has been in practice in the city for three months and at least two more months are required to make sure the system works without a problem.

“Cameras will be installed in urban areas in the first phase of the scheme and inter-city roads will be covered in the next step,” said the official.
