The number of people who lost their lives by drowning in Iran increased by 3.9% in the last Iranian year (ended March 20).

Some 913 people, comprising 798 men and 115 women, died in drowning accidents, IRNA reported.

Rivers caused the largest number of fatalities with 260 drowned people. Around 180 lives cut short in the seas, 170 in unguarded areas.

“Others drowned in swimming pools (139), canals (85), artificial lakes and dams (79), water wells (32), natural lakes (29) and other places (109),” said Amir Hossein Mahdavi, deputy for medicine and laboratory affairs at the Iranian Legal Medicine Organization.   

The largest number of deaths were in the provinces of Khuzestan, Mazandaran, Gilan, and Fars, whereas Semnan, Qom and North Khorasan had the fewest drowning cases.
