The number of female-headed households has seen an upswing from 1.2 million in 1991 to 3 million in 2017. At present, 9.5% of all women are living alone due to the death of spouse (7.3%) or divorce (2.2%), and drug addiction is the major cause of divorce, Salamat News reported, citing statistics from the results of the national census held last year. Fahimeh Farahmandpour, adviser for women’s affairs at the Interior Ministry, said different programs have been developed to reduce addiction rates in the country.
