Since the beginning of holy month of Ramadan (May 27), patrons have contributed more than 600 billion rials ($15 million) to the National Compensation Committee to release people serving prison terms for unintentional money-related offenses, said Asadollah Julaee, head of the committee, on Wednesday. “More than 2,000 prisoners can be released with the help of financial contributions made so far by philanthropists,” IRNA quoted him as saying. Staying in prison can cause many problems for families like financial instability, poverty and more debt. Earlier, Julaee said that most of the prisoners committed the offenses due to negligence, ignorance and lack of information, and many are underwriters for other people’s debts and loans.
