The population growth rate is below zero in the capital Tehran, while it is growing by 4.7% in the suburbs and outlying areas of cities, said Sabra Saeedi, a city council member of Bojnurd in North Khorasan Province.

“Outlying areas are where the problems (of social harm and hygiene) arise due to population density and lack of basic services. Policies are necessary to decentralize facilities in big cities,” she said, news website reported.  North Khorasan, Khorasan Razavi, and South Khorasan are among the provinces with the highest suburban population in Iran. According to Roads and Urban Development Minister Abbas Akhoundi, more than one third of the urban population lives in city outskirts and shanty towns.
