Every year on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event, established in 2004, aims to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products, and to thank blood donors for their voluntary, life-saving gift of donating blood. WHO estimates that blood donation by 1% of the population can meet a nation’s most basic requirements for plasma. The rate of blood donation in Iran is 27 units per 1000 people (2.7%), IRNA reported. Iran is among 57 countries which collect 100% of their blood supply from voluntary, unpaid blood donors.  Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi says there are enough blood supplies to meet a week’s requirement.
