The Food and Drug Administration has issued permits for production of 700 traditional medications, according to the head of Traditional Medicine School at the Tehran University of Medical Sciences. “These herbal medicines have not reached mass production yet, but will account for a large part of the pharmaceutical sector in the future,” Hossein Rezaeizadeh told ISNA. Due to Iran’s geographical diversity more than 7,500 species of herbal plants are grown, of which 1,800 are used in traditional medicine. Many of the herbal plants are unique to Iran and found nowhere else in the world. Several traditional drugs and medicinal herbs are successful substitutes for common conditions like colds or chronic coughs.
