A recent study conducted by Tehran University of Medical Sciences indicates that the average rate of antibiotic prescription by physicians in Tehran Province has decreased from 39% in 2013 to 34% in 2016, said Dr Manan Haji Mahmudi, deputy of food and drugs at TUMS. Antimicrobial resistance is a global public health challenge, accelerated by the overuse of antibiotics which can’t treat viral infections, IRNA reported. Increased antimicrobial resistance is the cause of severe infections, complications, longer hospital stays and increased mortality. Antibiotic overprescribing is a particular problem in primary care, where viruses cause most infections and can’t be treated with antibiotics.
