Two police officers were wounded in an exchange of fire with members of a drug gang in Qasr-e-Qand County in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan on Tuesday evening, said provincial police commander, General Hossein Rahimi.

Two gangsters on a motorcycle opened fire on the police who were chasing them, injuring the two officers. They were transferred to hospital, IRNA reported.

Armed attacks against security forces are not rare in the border province.

Officials say the battle against drug addiction and trafficking costs the country $1 billion annually. Iran lies on the transit corridor between the world’s biggest opium producer Afghanistan and drug dealers in Europe. It shares a 975-kilometer common border with Afghanistan.
