Due to the outbreak of avian flu in Russia and the possibility of transmission by migratory birds, bird hunting in Golestan Province has been banned, said Esmaeil Mohajer, head of the provincial Department of Environment (DoE).

“Last year (ended March 20, 2014) hunting permits were issued for 8000 individuals but at present, hunting is prohibited in the province till the end of this year (March 20, 2015). Violators will be sentenced to imprisonment in addition to financial penalties,” ILNA quoted him as saying. Annually 97 bird species migrate to the province’s wetlands.
