Electronic shackles will be used for 40,000 offenders to monitor them when they are under home arrest. The plan will be implemented by the end of the next year in March 2019, said Asghar Jahangir, head of Iran Prisons Organization. “Currently they can be used only for prisoners jailed for unintentional financial crimes,” IRNA quoted him, as saying. An unveiling ceremony for the new electronic shackles was held last week in Tehran in the presence of IPO and judiciary officials. Earlier Jahangir had said use of the electronic shackles can reduce the number of prisoners in the country’s jails.
