The opening ceremony of the National No Tobacco Week, to coincide with the World No Tobacco Day (May 31), will be held at the Health Ministry premises in Tehran and attended by senior officials.

Several programs have been planned during the week to draw attention to the harmful effects of smoking. In Iran, 65,000 people die annually due to smoking and related diseases, IRNA reports.

The World No Tobacco Day is intended to encourage a 24-hour period of abstinence from all forms of tobacco consumption around the globe. The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2017 is “Tobacco – a threat to development.”

The occasion will demonstrate the threat that the tobacco industry poses to the sustainable development of all countries, including the health and economic wellbeing of their citizens, and propose measures that governments and the public should take to promote health by confronting the global tobacco crisis.
