Iranian police forces seized 3.6 tons of illicit drugs and several weapons in the southern province of Sistan-Baluchestan on May 9. Police discovered and seized the contraband and weapons hidden in six vehicles coming from the border city of Bampur to Iranshar, and arrested seven people, said Colonel Hossein Rahimi, provincial police chief, IRNA reported. Officials say the battle against drug addiction and trafficking costs Iran $1 billion annually. Iran lies on the transit corridor between the world’s biggest opium producer Afghanistan and drug dealers in Europe.
