An earthquake measuring 5.3 degrees on the Richter scale jolted Sefid Sang County, Khorasan Razavi Province early Wednesday at 1:42 am. No casualties were reported until print time.  According to the Geophysics Institute of Tehran University, the tremor was registered at a depth of seven km, Iranian Seismological Center’s website reported. Over 37 aftershocks were registered following the earthquake and the biggest one that occurred at 6 am was magnitude 4.4.

Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) has sent 12 rescue teams to the place.

Earlier on April 5, a 6.1-magnitude earthquake struck the central and eastern parts of the province which left two people dead and 34 wounded. The quake’s epicenter was in Sefid Sang village, a remote mountainous area home to 5,000 people, located about 80 km southeast of the capital Mashhad.

Iran sits astride several major seismic faults, and is prone to frequent earthquakes, many of which have been devastating.
