Two new vaccines have been added to the national childhood immunization program as planned in the World Immunization Week (April 24-30), announced director of the Health Ministry’s Preventable Diseases Department. “Pneumococcal vaccine and rotavirus vaccine will be added in the current Iranian year,” that ends in March 2018, said Dr. Mohsen Zahrei, as reported by ISNA. Pneumococcal vaccine protects children against pneumococcal infections, meningitis, and sepsis and must be given before the age of two. Rotavirus vaccine protects them against rotavirus illness which causes severe diarrhea.
