Iranian police arrested narcotics traffickers transporting more than 1.5 tons of opium in the southeastern province of Sistan-Baluchestan, after a car chase and gun battle on a border road near the city of Iranshahr. “Following extensive intelligence surveillance and after receiving information about a drug operation near Iranshahr, police commandos lay in ambush in the area and arrested members of the gang transporting drugs in a sedan,” said General Hossein Rahimi, provincial police chief on Saturday, IRNA reported. Iran, which has a 900-kilometer common border with Afghanistan, has been used as the main conduit for smuggling Afghan drugs to narcotics kingpins in Europe. Despite high economic and human costs, Iran has been actively fighting drug-trafficking over the past three decades.
