A pilot plan to upgrade informal settlements has been developed and will be implemented soon in three cities, Zahedan in Sistan-Baluchestan, Mashhad in Khorasan Razavi, and Ahvaz in Khuzestan provinces, said Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli on Thursday.

Speaking on the sidelines of a meeting on “Social Challenges of Informal Settlements’ in Khuzestan, he said “We will visit the cities after three months to monitor progress of the projects,” IRNA reported.

Earlier, Deputy Minister of Roads and Urban Development Mohammad Saeed Izadi had said the plans to upgrade shanty towns would include enhancing the quality of urban services in the areas by providing better housing and health facilities and increasing educational and green spaces.

Currently, 11 million people live in informal settlements across the metropolises.
