Efforts are underway to register Hamun Wetland in Iran and Afghanistan as a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. A report on the wetland will be sent to the World Conservation Union, said Ahmad Ali Keikha, deputy director of natural environment and biodiversity at the Department of Environment (DoE).

To conserve the Hamun Wetland a series of national and international steps have been taken and registering it on the UNESCO list is one of the measures in progress, IRNA reported.

During President Rouhani’s visit to Sistan and Baluchestan Province earlier this year, $500m funding was allocated for water resources projects and also management of agricultural fields around the wetland.
