According to the results of the recent National Population and Housing Census released in February, 88% of the Iranian population are literate, having improved from 84.6% and 84.8% in the two preceding censuses respectively.
Based on the preliminary findings, Tehran Province was leading with a literacy rate of 92.9% while the lesser-developed Sistan-Baluchistan Province was at the bottom of the list with 76%. The provinces of Alborz, Semnan, and Yazd with 92.2%, 91.5%, and 90.9% came after Tehran with the highest literacy rates.
Meanwhile, the biggest growth in literacy compared with the previous census five years ago was in Bushehr, Sistan-Baluchistan, Qazvin, South Khorasan, and Hormozgan.
The rate of literacy among the 10-49 age group is 94.7%, up by 2.3% and 3% from the previous two censuses in 2012 and 2007, the website of the Statistical Center of Iran reported.
