Public Transport Discount for Conscripts

Conscripts stationed in Tehran are eligible for 80% discount on all public transport systems from the beginning of the fiscal year (March 21), as per a bill passed by the Tehran City Council on Tuesday.

“Conscripts will pay 20% of the fare for a maximum of four trips per day,” said Ahmad Donyamali, head of the council’s transportation committee, IRNA reported.

Public transport such as Tehran Bus Rapid Transit and subway are preferred means of commuting in the sprawling and expensive capital that is home to 12 million people.

The BRT network stretches across Tehran on 10 designated lines and accounts for 25% of all commutes, while the metro carries nearly four million passengers a day. At present, the subway system comprises five operational lines (1, 2, 3, 4 and 5) with over 100 stations. Lines 6 and 7 are under construction.

The price of each one-way trip within one of the public transport systems varies between 4,000 rials (10 cents) to 8,000 rials (20 cents), which is expected to increase by 15%-20% in the coming months.
