A young man was severely injured in Baneh city, Kurdistan Province, after a land mine from the 1980-88 Iran-Iraq war exploded on Monday, cutting off a limb. Esmael Azizian, 30, who was on his way to Kupich-e-Olya village in Sanandaj was transferred to hospital, IRNA reported. The eight-year military conflagration between the two neighbors ended three decades ago and killed a million people on both sides. In spite of efforts by demining forces, people (especially guards in border areas) have been killed or maimed on multiple occasions due to the landmine blasts. Soil erosion and rainfall are thought to have moved mines into residential areas.
