Educating and training refugees in technical and vocational skills paves the way for reinforcing peace and stability, said Sivanka Dhanapala, representative of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) Office in Iran.

“In addition to promoting the quality of life for refugees, education can create awareness and also help prevent erroneous preconceptions and mindsets,” he said at the inauguration ceremony of a new school for refugees in Shiraz, Fars Province on Monday. The school was constructed with the help of the Interior Ministry’s provincial Bureau for Aliens and Foreign Immigrants’ Affairs (BAFIA) and the UNHCR.

There are 110,000 registered refugees (mostly Afghans) living in Fars Province, and 30,000 of them are students, according to IRNA.
