    44 Iranian Institutions in 2016 ITU Ranking

    The research quality ranking system of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) in its 2016 edition, has named 44 Iranian institutions among the top ones in the Islamic World, the Iranian Research Institute for Information Science and Technology (IRANDOC) announced on Monday.

    The Geneva-based United Nations agency evaluates how its member scientific institutions rank in ICT development and research done with regards to connectivity challenges and solutions.

    It assesses institutions in the category of Islamic world based on five quality-related indices before ranking them. They include citation ratios of 1%, 10% and 50% in top-quality journals as well as the scientific cooperation ratio among compatriot and international institutions.

    A total of 486 institutions were evaluated by ITU, including 109 in Iran, ISNA reported. The University of Tehran ranked first in Iran in citation ratios, and Tehran University of Medical Sciences stood top in scientific cooperation.

    Iran and Turkey with 44 institutions each represent the highest number of institutions assessed and named in the ITU list. Egypt and Malaysia each with 17 institutions, Pakistan with 12 and Saudi Arabia with 10 institutions come next. The ITU ranking system obtain the data to make assessments from Scopus which is the largest abstract and citation database of peer-reviewed literature, including scientific journals, books and conference proceedings.
