There are 11 centers which perform cochlear implants in the country and the number of people with hearing impairment is on the rise, said Saeed Mahmoudian, head of the Hearing Health Office at the Health Ministry, on the sidelines of a conference on the occasion of World Hearing Day.

Hearing loss poses a high burden for the economy globally, and has a significant impact on the lives of those affected. “Interventions to address hearing loss are available through cost-effective devices,” he said, ISNA reported.  During the past eight years, more than 6,500 cochlear implants were performed for the poor and needy introduced to the centers by the State Welfare Organization, with financial aid from the Health Ministry.

A cochlear implant is an electronic medical device that replaces the function of the damaged inner ear.
