Traffic police chiefs met on Monday in Tehran to discuss the measures to be taken during the upcoming Norouz (Persian New Year) holidays from March 20, to prevent road mishaps during the two-week long holiday for the festivities. The New Year holiday is the busiest travel season with millions of Iranians all across the country travelling to resorts and historical sites.

Traffic police, aid workers from Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS), and medical staff in ambulances will therefore be on high alert to provide services to travelers in the instance of any road accidents, IRNA reported.

The number of deaths due to road crashes fell to 14,000 during the first 11 months of the current year that ends on March 20, said Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli, on the sidelines of the meeting. During the same period in the previous year, the figure was 15,000.
