Translating the UN Sustainable Development Goal 4 into national priorities is an immense undertaking that requires adapting the global targets to national priorities and the local context, and incorporating them into national development plans, said Esther Kuisch Laroche, UNESCO representative to the Islamic Republic of Iran, on Monday.

Addressing the first National Congress of Successful Iranian Women at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University, she said all stakeholders including the government, civil society, academia, the private sector and local communities should mobilize and engage to contribute to its implementation, IRNA reported.

She stressed the importance of monitoring and evaluation in achieving the targets, and urged all governments to place particular focus on this key aspect of SDG 4 (in the 2030 Agenda) which envisages ensuring inclusive and equitable quality education and promoting lifelong learning opportunities for all.

Education for all is the key to eliminating poverty and access to equal opportunities for all. It paves the way for food security, health, and welfare, Laroche said.

Women’s share in research is 30% globally, and their share in decision-making roles is even lower, she noted.

“We believe that women’s participation and inclusion will help the world toward reaching sustainable development.”

Participants and speakers presented pathways to reaching gender balance and equity in the society, and make possible sustainable development by incorporating women in important decision-making processes.

The conference discussed the role of women as half of the population in social and economic development in line with article 31 of the five-year economic and social development plan (2016-2021) which calls for harnessing women’s potential.

Held in cooperation with the Vice Presidency for Women and Family Affairs, universities, and ministries, the confab explored the obstacles to and solutions for female management and leadership.
