In efforts to increase global cooperation against illicit drugs, a two-day international conference on Cooperation Against Illicit Drugs and Related Organized Crime, was held in Tehran.

Experts exchanged information on routes of illegal drug smuggling and the best strategies to prevent it.

Interior Minister Rahmani Fazli and United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Executive Director Yury Fedotov, as well as 35 representatives from countries in Southwest Asia, Central Asia and Europe attended the Feb.27-28 conference, ISNA reported.

Iran is a major transit route for drugs smuggled from Afghanistan to Europe, the Middle East and Africa.

The war on drug trade that originates in Afghanistan has claimed the lives of nearly 4,000 Iranian police officers over the past three decades.
