More than 25% of Iranian men and 4% of women are regular smokers. On the other hand the major cause for half of all deaths in the country is cardiovascular diseases which are closely associated with smoking, said Health Minister Seyed Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi on Sunday. “Smoking is higher among people aged 45- 50. The bad habit can lead to a buildup of fatty material which narrows the arteries and can cause angina (chest pain), a heart attack or a stroke,” IRNA quoted him as saying. Stating that healthy diet is also essential for heart health, he said 94% of men and 85% women consume more salt than the permissible level of 4 grams per day.
