    Drugs Seized in Kerman

Iranian police recently seized 877 kg of illicit drugs in Jiroft County in the southern Kerman Province. Police forces discovered and seized about one ton of opioid in 90 packages from a vehicle that was leaving Jiroft city, Majid Rostami, Jiroft’s general prosecutor told reporters on Thursday, IRNA reported.  Gun shots were fired after the smugglers refused to stop the vehicle, he said, adding that the traffickers fled under the cover of darkness leaving the vehicle behind. Officials say the battle against drug addiction and trafficking costs the country $1 billion annually. Iran lies on the transit corridor between the world’s biggest opium producer Afghanistan and drug kingpins in Europe.
