Only 10% of Iranians with schizophrenia are aware of their condition, said Tayyebeh Dehbashizadeh, head of the Society to Support Schizophrenic Patients. “Globally, about 1% of the population lives with this condition, and it is estimated that there are 800,000 people in Iran with schizophrenia,” she was quoted as saying by Khabaronline.

Schizophrenia is a chronic and severe mental disorder that affects how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. Schizophrenics may seem like they have lost touch with reality. Right now there are 1,500 patients registered at the society of whom 600 are covered by the State Welfare Organization.  “The symptoms begin showing at the age of 15, and then worsen by the age of 20 due to social harm and peer pressure in university, military service, etc,” she said.
