Wintery weather and rain and snow have hit many parts of Iran, with schools and educational institutions closing in several provinces across the country.

Heavy snow and rainfall affected 28 provinces on Monday with temperatures plunging to below zero, and schools closing in 16 regions including Tehran, on Tuesday.

Major roads in mountainous regions, particularly in the provinces of Qazvin, Arak, Hamedan and Zanjan, were closed due to blizzards and risk of avalanches.

Traffic police has been urging people to cancel or put off their trips for a couple of days as the cold snap continues across most provinces.

Aid teams reached out to nearly 12,500 people in 18 provinces grappling with snow, and provided emergency shelter to over 2,000 people stuck on roads. Several domestic flights were also cancelled on Monday and Tuesday due to icy runways and low visibility. The Iran Meteorological Organization has forecast more precipitation across the country for the next couple of days, ISNA reported.
