Tooth decay (or cavities) is the most common infectious disease after influenza across the world, said Dr. Mansoureh Mirzaei, dental specialist and member of Iranian Academy of Cosmetic and Restorative Dentistry. “Thousands of people suffer tooth decay in Iran, which usually leads to other health conditions due to negligence and bad oral hygiene,” she told Mehr News Agency. About 5%-10% of the total public health costs pertain to oral health and dentistry. A minor decay due to bacterial infection, if neglected, can set in dental complications that include inflammation of the tissue around the tooth, tooth loss, and infection or abscess formation.
