There are presently 620 NGOs in the country working under the supervision of the Health Ministry, said Mostafa Jamali, head of the ministry’s Non-Governmental Organizations Office, on Sunday. In other words, there is one NGO active in the health field for every 130,000 people approximately, and their number has nearly doubled since 2012, IRNA reported. Globally, NGOs have become essential players in healthcare, particularly in the fight against non-communicable diseases such as cancers, diabetes, etc. Some of the well-known and successful NGOs in the country are Mahak Charity which supports child patients with cancer, Iranian Thalassaemia Society, Iranian Diabetes Society, Iranian Hemophilia Association and Kidney Foundation of Iran.
