Planting of grass in the capital’s 22 districts has been banned, announced Ali Mohammad Mokhtari, managing director of Tehran’s Parks and Green Space Organization.

Lawns are not suitable green cover for the metropolis “due to the high planting costs and water consumption; therefore the organization has put the project on hold,” he said.

Other plants species which require less water, including trees that are resistant to pests and are compatible with the city’s climate will be used as alternatives. The plan will be implemented for a period of 5 years, Mehr News agency reported. Even the large lawn areas created earlier will be replaced with other plant species.
