German Federal Police Chief Dieter Romann, lauded Iran’s anti-narcotics operations saying the country’s measures in the fight against drug smuggling and trafficking “are positive and highly effective.”

He made the remarks during a visit to border areas in Sistan-Baluchistan Province on Sunday at the head of a delegation, where he was briefed on the activities, projects, methods, and progress of the border police force.

“Iran has paid huge costs in the fight against drug trafficking that has resulted in 3,800 deaths of police officers and injury to 12,000 others,” said Colonel Mohammad Mollashahi, deputy commander of the provincial Border Police, IRNA reported.

The southeastern province shares 1,600 km of borders with Afghanistan and Pakistan, and lies on the main trafficking route for poppy, the source of opium and heroin, from Afghanistan to western Europe.
