Health Minister Hassan Qazizadeh Hashemi broke ground for a comprehensive cancer center in Tehran, reported to be the largest of its kind in the Middle East, on Saturday in the presence of officials, academia, and experts. The 20-storey Tat Center for Cancer Prevention, Treatment and Research will be built on an area of 45,000 sq meters in District 22 in western Tehran and will be equipped with 800 beds. It is financed by the local Tat Goodwill Foundation and is projected to be completed by March 2018, IRNA reported. “The specialized facility will operate as a cancer reference center for the Middle East, offering all services from prevention to diagnosis, treatment, rehabilitation and research,” said Mohammad Esmail Akbari, director of the cancer research center at Tehran’s Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Sciences. There are currently 500,000 people living with cancer in Iran, and 90,000 are added each year.
