Globally, the prevalence of learning disabilities is estimated to range from 1% to 30% of all school-age children; however the figure is 20% in Iran, said Dr. Peiman Hassani Abharian, head of the Institute for Cognitive and Brain Sciences (ICBS), affiliated to Shahid Beheshti University of Medical Science in Tehran.

Learning disability (LD) is a condition giving rise to learning difficulties, and dyslexia and dyscalculia are the most common types of LD in the country, salamatnews.com quoted him as saying.

It is thought that learning disabilities may be caused by hereditary, alcohol or drug abuse during pregnancy, medical reasons (premature birth, diabetes, meningitis in mother or offspring), and factors like poor prenatal healthcare.
