The University of Tehran signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Sultan Qaboos University of Oman on Tuesday for exchange of seismic data online.

The agreement was signed between the two universities in order to better cover seismic sources in Makran Trench, particularly the subduction zone (where tectonic plates meet) along the northeastern margin of the Gulf of Oman, adjacent to the southwestern coast of Baluchistan in Pakistan and the southeastern coast of Iran, as well as to more precisely record earthquakes in southeast Iran, Mehr News Agency reported.

Currently, seismic data is received in both countries from two seismic stations at Oman Sea border affiliated to the seismological center of Geophysics Institute at University of Tehran, and two other earthquake seismic stations in the Earthquake Monitoring Center (EMC) at Sultan Qaboos University on the southern edge of the Gulf of Oman. The stations are used for recording earthquakes, and for tsunami crisis management.
