Over 10 tons of illicit drugs were seized over the past two weeks across the country, said deputy head of Iran’s Drug Control Headquarters Assadollah Hadinejad, on Wednesday.

“Opium comprised the bulk of the 10,376 kg of drugs seized, followed by psychedelics, hash, heroin, morphine, and methamphetamine respectively,” he was quoted by ISNA as saying.

The seizures were made during 1,406 operations in Kerman, Sistan-Baluchistan, Khorasan Razavi, South Khorasan, Yazd, and Hormozgan provinces.

A total of 6,614 people were arrested, 147 cars impounded, and four weapons were seized.

Iran lies on the main trafficking route for poppy, the source of opium and heroin, from Afghanistan to western Europe. The country accounted for the most opiate seizures in the world in 2014.
