MMR Decreases

The maternal mortality rate (MMR) in the country is less than 20 deaths per 100,000 live births at present, while the figure was 27 in 2010, said Safiyeh Shahriari, a board member of the Family Health Association of Iran.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), the MMR in developing countries in 2015 was 239 per 100,000 live births as against 12 per 100,000 in developed countries, salamatnews.com reported.  “Improved access to free prenatal healthcare services and the recent increase in the number of health centers in deprived areas of the country have played an important role in reducing the risk of maternal mortality,” she said.

The association established in 1994, is a non-governmental organization that contributes to promotion of sexual and reproductive health especially among the youth and vulnerable groups, consistence with the society’s cultural values.
