During the first half of the current year (started March 20), the Board of Trustees to Fund Organ Transplants in Iran, affiliated to the Health Ministry, provided financial assistance for 450 bone grafting procedures. The surgeries were performed in Tehran, Fars, Kerman, Mazandaran, West Azarbaijan, and Khorasan Razavi provinces. The Majlis (parliament) approved the creation of the board in 1999. Its aim is to provide financial assistance mainly for organ transplants so that patients can avoid seeking costly medical care overseas, Salamatnews.com reported. Since its establishment, the board has borne a greater part of transplant costs, as such operations are expensive and insurance companies do not pay for it.
