Neurosurgeons at Shiraz University of Medical Sciences successfully conducted a Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery on two patients.
Dr. Razmkon who led the surgical team said the operation “is one of the most advanced in medical sciences.” Due to its complications, very few centers in Iran are able to do it, and for the very first time it was performed in Shiraz on two 22-year-old patients diagnosed with Dystonia, a neurological movement disorder,” Mehr News agency quoted him as saying. DBS is a neurosurgical procedure involving the implantation of a medical device called a brain pacemaker, which sends electrical impulses, through implanted electrodes, to specific parts of the brain (brain nucleus) for the treatment of movement and affective disorders.
Razmkon maintained that more than 70 percent of the patients’ disorders had been treated during the 10-hour surgery and expressed hope for their complete recovery.
