The rate of food insecurity in Iran is currently 5%, says the Health Ministry’s head of nutrition, Dr. Zahra Abdollahi. “Food poverty has been contained over the past two decades and about 75% was curbed by 2010,” she said, ISNA reported. Noting that the country is facing a growing rate of obesity and overweight rather than food poverty, she said the small rate of food insecurity pertains to a number of underprivileged provinces, particularly in south and southeastern Iran, and that remedial programs have been devised under the Supreme Council of Health and Food Security.
